Uttexeter Cemetery in Plympton, Ontario where the PROUTS were originally laid to rest.  Below second row is the original tombstone for John PROUT before he was moved to the cemetery in Forest, Ontario with his wife and sons.                                                  

JOHN PROUT, SR.   born 8 Aug 1819 in Cornwall, Eng. and died in 1902. He married Elizabeth PROUT born 3 Mar 1821 in Cornwall and she died 29 Jan 1914 in Forest, Ontario. They together had 7 children: Richard, Mary, Francis, John, Elizabeth, Thomas, and Jane.   

1.  RICHARD PROUT born 15 Nov 1845, died 5 Feb 1931 at the age of 85 yrs, 2 mo, 21 days in Forest, Ontario.   Married in 1872 to Elizabeth Ann OKE (daughter of Wm. OKE), born 28 Nov 1849 and died 28 Mar 1921 at the age of 72 years.  Above is Richard's  and Elizabeth's tombstone. Their children: 

• John Joseph PROUT 1875-1957 married on 25 Dec 1906 in Lambton  Elizabeth Watson (born 1881 in St. Johns-died 1927)  She is the daughter of John M. WATSON and Louisa McGUIRE.  Their children were:

2. MARY PROUT  born in 1849 and died in 1934 and was married in in 1868 to Samuel MAIDMENT (son of Henry and Maria SHARPE. The 1871 Canada Census shows Henry at age 61 and living in Warwick).  Their children were

• Elizabeth Ann MAIDMENT born 1869 and on 5 Oct 1892 in Lambton she married James Cairns LOWRIE (born abt 1870)  (his parents were James and Elisabeth LOWRIE).  The 1916 Canada Census shows that Elizabeth was residing in Portage la Prairie, Manitoba.
• Francis John MAIDMENT 1871 and died at the age of 18 Nov 16, 1927 and was a boiler maker.

3. FRANCIS PROUT born  1852 in Rapid City, Ontario and married Mary BYRNS on     19 Jan 1876 in Wyoming, Ontario.

4. JOHN PROUT born 26 Mar 1854 in Lambton and died 11 Feb 1902 in Rapid City, Ontario of pneumonia. He married Elizabeth BYRNS in 1882. In the 1901 Canadian Census they were living in Marquette District, Sub District Blanchard D-2 and that John's brother Samuel PROUT, born 17 Jan 1859 in Ontario was also residing with them.   The 1911 Canada Census shows Elizabeth, Samuel and Ellie living together in Marquette, Manitoba.  John had passed away in Rapid City after visiting with the family for a holiday and he came down with pneumonia.  John and Elizabeth had three children:

5. ELIZABETH PROUT  born in 1857 and died in 1950. She married Duncan Nelson SINCLAIR, (born abt 1858), on 15 Apr 1881 in Lambton. (Duncan's parents were Duncan and Susan SINCLAIR).

• Duncan Garfield SINCLAIR born abt 1891 and married 11 Oct 1916 in Lambton to Bertha SECHLER, born abt 1888.  (Her parents were David SECHLER and Margaret SPTITZ.)

7. THOMAS PROUT born 12 July 1862 died 5 Mar 1917 at the age of 55 yrs, 7 months, and 21 days in Plympton.   Married Mary Julia BYRNS (daughter to Ira and Abigal and sister to Elizabeth, Emma, Oscar, Ira, Wilford, Manley and Wilbert Byrnes) and she was born in 1862 and she died 10 Apr 1914. Their children were (all born in Lambton):

• Lena PROUT born 21 June 1891 and died 4 Apr 1914 and married 12 Aug 1914 to Charles WILLIAMS in Moosejaw, Sask.
• Flossie Merle PROUT born 9 Aug 1893 and married Otis SHELBURN
• John Wesley PROUT born 17 Nov 1895 and married Frances KIER.  He served in the Canadian Soldiers of World War I 1914-1918.  He was living in Briercrest, Saskatchewan with his mother when he enlisted. In the 1901 and the 1911 Canada Census John was residing at home.
• Thomas PROUT

WILLIAM PROUT (brother to John PROUT, Sr.)  born 28 Aug 1823 and died 20 Nov 1890.  He married Mary TREMAINE born in 1824 in Halifax, Nova Scotia (parents were John L. TREMAINE and Mary Lee) and died 10 Aug 1906.  They had nine children: Jane, Catherine, Maria, Annie, Matthew, Amelia, Mary Ellen and William (twins) and Daniel.

2.  CATHERINE PROUT  born in 1849 and died 1937 and married Thomas STEPHENSON. (His parents were Hugh and Elizabeth STEPHENSON).  Their children were

• Jane STEPHENSON, born 1864 and died 2 Oct 1919, 55 yrs, 3 mo. in Forest, Ontario

• Thomas G. STEPHENSON, Sr.,  he died 30 Sept 1879 at the age of 3  months and is buried at the Uttexeter Cemetery.

3. MARIA PROUT  born in 1851 and died 10 Nov 1899.  Married Francis BENNETT on     24 May 1870 in Perth.

4. ANNIE PROUT  born 7 July 1853 and died 14 Jan 1933.  She married John Nelson VANATTER (see below for his family information)  born in 1843 in Moulton Township, Haldimand County, Ontario and died in 1925 in Lambton and is buried in the Beechwood Cemetery in Lambton County, Ontario  (son to James and Regina (MILLER).  Their child was

• Theodore V. Ernest VANATTER born 11 Apr 1877 in Mora and died 21 Mar 1962.  He married 28 Aug 1905 in Lambton Minnie COOPER (1886-1919) (parents were James COOPER and Annie PROUT)

5. MATTHEW  born 16 Sept 1852 and died 13 Jan 1870.

6. AMELIA  born 1857 and married Thomas McKEWON (McKEOWN) born abt 1849 in CO Peel and his parents were Joseph and Margaret McKEOWN.

MARY ELLEN PROUT  born 10 March 1859 in Plympton and  died 20 Sept 1930. On    6 Sept 1882 in Plympton, Ontario she  married Robert Wesley SPARLING born 29 Nov 1859 in Streetsville, Peel, Ontario and  died on Nov 26, 1944 in Streetsville.         He was christened on 27 Jan 1860. (son to Thomas and Isabella Sparling). Their children were:

• Eliza Edith SPARLING born 7 Feb 1883 in Lambton and married in 1908 to John HAMILTON
• Mary Ellen SPARLING born 9 Mar 1886 in Plympton and died in 1969 and she remained a spinster
• Isabelle Laurine SPARLING born 23 July 1890 in Lambton - 1980 and on 22 May 1915 in York she married Leslie Ephraim POSTE born abt 1890 in Coepoy Bay, Ontarior. (His parents were Frank Post and Edith Cross).

Not sure, but I do believe this might be of the Prout family in Canada.  Ella Pearl Prout, sitting on the right, and Joseph is above her to the left and Ted is leaning on his shoulders.  The man to Ella's right, might be her brother-in-law and  the woman sitting   to her left might be her sister, and the woman standing at the other end might be her mother, but not sure.  If anyone can identify any of the people, please email me.  I think the picture was taken in the early 1940's. 

This strange picture has eluded me for many years. It was found in my grandmother  Ella's belongings and the only writing on the back said "Tent Place". I believe it might    be of some relative, but not sure on whose side it would be. It's a puzzle that needs to  be put together somehow.
